hud tapi not installing / hanging - fixed

 

I had a weird issue where my fonality HUD tapi client wasn’t installing… it would sit at installing and never do anything.  I fired up Process Explorer (by Sysinternals), found the installer process (I think the name was tapi_installer.exe (on my system it was tapi_installer_x64.exe), and noticed it was “Suspended”.  I right-clicked the process, and  hit “resume”, and the installer authenticator popped up.  Once I said yes to the installation, everything installed successfully.  Drove me crazy, and didn’t find any posts on it, so I figured I would post a quick one.  Hope this helps someone.

 

 

Notepad++ : Fixing global font size saving, Adding Language Files (and MORE)

SAVE YOUR FONT SIZE (REALLY)

I had an issue where my global font size was not saving in Notepad++ (after going to Settings > Style Configurator).  It was pretty frustrating, and the fix is actually super-simple! 

  • All you have to do is right-click Notepad++, and Run as Administrator

Once the program loads, go into settings, change the font-size, and save & close.  Afterwards, when you load notepad++ as you normally would, the settings will be just as you really wanted!

ADDING A FILE EXTENSION FOR AUTOMATIC SYNTAX HIGHLIGHTING

Here’s another problem I fixed while correcting this issue.  A couple days back, I was trying to tell Notepad++ to always open Smarty Template Engine files (extension = .tpl) as an HTML file instead of as normal text file (for Syntax Highlighting purposes).  Notepad++ would never save my settings, and I’d have to change my 100+ tpl file settings every time re-loaded (not really, but you get the picture).

After running as administrator (described above), I then went back to Settings > style configurator > language > html > User ext [input box] > typing "tpl" (without quotes or a preceding period).  This process finally worked for adding a custom extension that should be associated with a Language Syntax Highlight file.

OTHER FIXES AND METHODS

This will also likely fix other "global settings" that don’t save under style configurator (and perhaps even settings > preferences, although I can’t confirm at the moment. 

You can also sift through the XML in the notepad++ installation directory (under program files), and method I describe here is slightly easier, IMHO.

MacBook Pro Battery "Not Charging" - Fixed!

So, I know Apple has been getting a bad rap lately for their batteries dying, and perhaps that’s the truth. 

In my particular scenario that wasn’t the case.  My MacBook Pro just suddenly stopped charging yielding a “Not Charging” message at the top.  Powering the machine off and pressing the battery button yielded a bunch of rapid blinks on only 1 led.  This happened after I upgraded to Snow Leopard from Leopard (10.5.8 -> 10.6).  Not sure if it was a coincidence or not.

Yet, oddly,  2 weeks ago, I had a 2 hour charge when on battery.  I thought it really odd… after further investigation I learned that the SMC (System Management Controller) was responsible for battery charging, amongst other things.... (like closing the lid puts the laptop into sleep mode, which was acting funky too, and this method fixed it)… maybe it’ll fix the laptop from getting so hot (thermal management)… well, one can hope! J

Here’s the fix that got me rolling…

 

  • Shutdown your system
  • pull out the battery
  • press and hold power button for 5 seconds (I gave it 7 seconds “just in case”).
  • Pop battery back in, connect to power (via magsafe), and power on.
  • You (hopefully) should see the charge indicator turn orange, which means it’s charging again – yay!
